I got schooled...by a 13-year old

While driving home from Whitney's house last night:

Alex: "We are going to Washington, D.C. for a spring break next year, right?"
Me: "Yeah, we can probably go."
Alex: "So, where is Washington, D.C.?"
Me: "It is in the east coast."
Alex: "Yeah, but in what state?"
Me: "D.C. as in District of Columbia."
Alex: "District of Columbia is not a state!"
Me: "Of course it is. It's a tiny state that is size of a few city blocks. That's where the White House is. It is next to Maryland, Delaware, Virginia"
Alex: "Mom, it is not a state!....I'm calling dad."
calls Rod on the cell phone. "Dad, is District of Columbia a state?" listens for a while.
hangs up the phone.
Alex: "HAH! Dad says it is not a state!"
Me: "What the heck? Well then, why? Why bother to put the initals in the end of the city name if those initials don't even indicate that it is a name of a state?"

So, I'm asking you, dear fellow bloggers, why is D.C. not a state? Please, educate the poorly informed Finn. And don't google it because I could do that (which I haven't done). Just give me your honest answer what you think is right. I really don't know the answer, which is quite obvious from the above conversation with Alex.

OR, was Rod wrong?

Comment now, please!

I think DC can't be a state because it has to be impartial for all the other states to get together and play and make rules and all that important stuff. So, it is a district, independent of state limitations.

LOVED your comment on my blog about Sandpoint - so true!

I think it can't be a state because no state deserves that much corruption!!!!

Nah, it's not a state. I'm pretty sure I didn't memorize D.C. as a state in grade school. But I like the first comment/reason on the page. It sounds pretty logical to me!

Do you want to know the honest truth? I have wondered the same thing many times, but have always been to lazy to look it up. But I don't seem to remember labeling it as a state on the map of the states in history class. So, you got me! I dunno! I'm off to google it!!!

(I do know it is beautiful there though! We went there on our honeymoon and loved it!)

I think your first commentor is right. However I just learned that a little while ago. The funny thing is I never even thought about it until like four years ago when we were living closer and I was like, "Mike what state is DC in again?" I am sure he thought I was the biggest loser then!

You know Marja?? here in Mexico, our capital city is Mexico, D.F. Initial D.F. means that it is considered another state... but I guess you can have an answer thinking on the number of states in USA... I mean, you guys have 50, right? is D.C. considered or not on that count...?
