TV 101

Things I have learned from late night TV:

-Heinz Ketchup bottle, the glass kind, has a number 57 engraved on the neck of the bottle. If you tap on the number (the number works as an air bubble) the ketchup starts flowing out of the bottle. Who knew!!!! All those times in the restaurants I have tapped the BOTTOM, or used a knife to get the ketchup flowing. And now I find out from Jay Leno that there was a method to the glass bottle madness all along. I haven't tried the trick yet, so I can't say this really works, but why would Jay Leno lie?

-If you have a smaller face, and somebody is taking your picture, don't bite down your back teeth because it makes your face look squished. Well, I don't have a small face, just a block head, but I tried it, and it works. My face doesn't seem so blocky when I do that. Thanks to Paulina Porizkova.

-Human hair shouldn't be used on clothing. If you missed the Project Runway episode last night, you can catch it a million times on Bravo TV.

-Fake boobs can be used as flotation devices. Proof can be seen on any "Survivor" episode.

My life is now complete

Yesterday I had my monthly haircut/color/nail appointment with Juli. Then this morning I had my wonderful appointment with Leigh, the long lost pedicurist. Ladies, you WANT to go visit Leigh and her whole crew. She operates in the basement of her house. This is a brand new house in Lindon, and her whole basement is a beautiful spa named "AMARA". She offers massages, body wraps, pedicures, manicures, waxing etc. She also has a boutique in there where she sells all kinds of clothing, jewelry, purses, shoes, baby stuff, swimwear etc. Phone # is 801-701-0218. Make an appointment and go see her. As for me, my life is now complete.

Don't look in the kitchen

I stayed in bed all weekend except when I had to take Alex to his quarter-finals basketball game (they won) on Saturday morning, and then to breakfast at Village Inn.

Ok, so what's with the most weird looking people who work at Village Inn? Have you EVER seen one normal person there? This time the weirdo-of-the-day was a husky woman with a long hair, but sides and back totally shaved. The second prize went to the host who seated us, and told everything about her younger brothers (I was there with Alex and Carsen). The joy of meeting somebody new. So, years ago, we went to Village Inn for breakfast, and we were seated so that I can totally see into the kitchen. Needless to say, I didn't like what went on in there. Before the waitress brought in our meals, she was snacking on our fries. From then on, we always request a table AWAY from the kitchen. I'm just not so interested in seeing how they mess with my food.

Rod came home on Saturday night from Mexico after missing his first flight. He brought a nice el recuerdo de la diarrea de México. How special indeed! We spent most of the Sunday in bed, coughing, sneezing, and running to the bathroom (not me). Today, I'm better and at work. Rod...not so much...Los saludos de México.

Not Missing/Missing in Action

While Rod's here
in Cuernavaca, Mexico

I'm in my bed
suffering from swollen glands, pounding headache, fever, and sore throat

The scenery in my neck of the woods is not so pretty.

If I were a novelist

My pen name would be Ajram Neslar.

With that kind of name I could be a mysterious woman from the middle east, maybe Iran, who fled the oppression to London in the 70s, married to an Irish pub owner whose actual name is O'Neslar but I had to drop the "O" because it is so dreadfully unnecessary.

But you smart people who read my blog cracked my name code already, huh? I would have to come up with another name, as mysterious...how about Ramja Lasner...same kind of tone and flavor as the first one, except this time the birth place would have to be Egypt, and I would be married to an English Professor with Austrian roots from Oxford.

Jara Eslarn could be another good one. A girl from a small cottage by a lake in the Swedish countryside who used to sit in the grass at sunset in the summer, dreaming about one day making out to the real world. My given name was actually Jaram, but it doesn't sound good to my young and rebellious ear.

A Perfect Storm on Nirvana in Atlanta

Rod's in Atlanta this weekend for a regional Zija convention. He likes to visit a particular shoe store called Friedman's that caters to NBA and NFL players with very large feet and need for great dress shoes. Eventhough Rod is neither a NBA or a NFL player, he has a huge need for beautiful dress shoes. How fitting that the store is on Nirvana, as Rod calls it (actually on Mitchell), and the store has a half off sale. The more perfect storm would have been ME in the ladies' shoe section making my selections....many, many selections.

Rod's loot so far: 1 calf, 1 alligator, and a snake.

Classic story of the lost tooth

If you have known me for a long time, you know, as well, that I used to have a fake tooth that was attached to a retainer. I lost that tooth when I was 17 years old while still living in Finland. The life in Finland wasn't always the easiest and I, among other friends, had to make a living somehow. This is where Russia, and its vast opportunities entered the picture. In the early 80s there was a huge demand for pantyhose, gum, pens, lipstick, hats etc. You almost could name it, and there was a demand for it in Russia, or Soviet Union, as it was called in the 80s before the wall came down.

My friends and I got a brilliant idea that we could do some smuggling to earn some hard cash. We started acquiring all of those wanted items, and planned our first trip over the border. Some of the items were hard to hide, but some of them were little easier. The hats fit nicely into the big camera bag under the soft foam. Pens were sewn into the lining of the jackets etc. The only hard items to hide were the pantyhose. So, we bought a bunch of small balloons, and stuffed the pantyhose into the balloons. Then we swallowed the balloons.

We crossed the border without an incident, and proceeded to our hotel in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). When we stepped out of the elevator in our hotel, each floor had a female attendant sitting on a stool at the middle of the hallway. This attendant opened the hotel room for us, and also entered the room and immediately started asking for items such as pantyhose, lipstick etc. We were always warned that some of these attendants might be working for the KGB, so we had to be very careful.

As the custom was, we started selling our items in the hotel room by bringing buyers in. This was done by word of mouth, only. Money started coming in, and the product flew out the door. Pantyhose was in high demand among the ladies, so they had to wait a little longer for them to "work" through our system. A couple of days later, we had pantyhose available.

As our luck would be, we were dumb first timers. One of the floor attendants reported us to the KGB, and we were taken in to the headquarters to be interrogated. We were separated into individual cells, and then taken in to be questioned by a cruel bunch of ugly men. All they wanted to know who the mastermind in Finland was for this smuggling operation. I couldn't give any names because, frankly, it was our stupid idea to do this in the first place. All I could say was that it was just us working alone.

Then the torture began.

I don't know if I was the first one to lose a tooth, and why they chose that particular tooth, I will never know, but we all lost some body parts. A friend of mine, lost his nails from his left hand. After a crueling couple of hours and a lot of blood and tears, we were let go. Just dumped on the street outside the headquarters. We all were in extreme pain, and were hardly able to get back to the hotel and then to the border. But we survived to swear that we would never do anything like that again.

And that is what I used to tell people how I lost my tooth.

It is a better story than the actual story that my permanent tooth never came in, and the dentist had to remove one of the teeth so the permanent tooth can be pulled in.

Lamination vs. paper tortilla chip bag

I have been in Young Women now for 6 1/2 years straight. First 5 were spent as the camp director and now the last 1 1/2 years as the president. As we all know, women (especially Young Women and Relief Society) like to laminate everything. So, when we Young Women prepare for a camp or any overnight function, the meal plans are laminated, the recipes are inside plastic protectors in a binder, and posters are made so they can be displayed all over the place so no one will miss anything. Everybody knows this, right?

So, how do the Boy Scouts or Young Men in our ward prepare meal plans for a campout?

Rod and Alex returned late Saturday night from their Young Men's father's and son's campout to Scofield. Yesterday when I was going through some stuff in the kitchen I noticed that something was written on the Tortilla chip bag that was brought back from the campout. (You may need to click on the pictures to get the full view)

Yes, the meal plans for the weekend were written with a pencil (the audacity!) on the tortilla chip bag.
You can imagine I was rolling on the floor laughing so hard. This would never even come to a Young Women's leaders' mind. How low-tech, indeed.
