Old Man and His Shopping "Cart"

Yes, I know what you are thinking. I was thinking the same thing. Who is that old man trying to grocery shop in the motorized cart. Do I even dare to recognize him or should I just walk away like I didn't know him. How embarrassing is this!!

Rod going shopping for cheese

Rod making important cheese selections.

Quick stop at the produce section to text Zija leaders. Luckily the Harmon's grocery police didn't stop him for texting and driving.

Later on, Alex and Rod tried to race to the check-out, almost taking out displays and crashing into people.

Sweet 16/Sweet 30

Last night we went to the Williams to watch BYU play against Florida in the NCAA Tournament. It didn't end well for the Cougars when they lost 72-83 to the Gators during overtime. But the Cougars had a great season and Jimmer carried the team all season long.

Game is on and everyone's watching. Heather, Taylor, Avery (at the table). Katie and Dash, Jenny, Carsen and Rod.

Heather had her birthday dinner at the same time so we celebrated her 30th. Happy birthday Heather.

Basketball Banquet

We had a Basketball Banquet last night that was held at the Sky Room at BYU. It was a lovely evening with coaches and parents honoring the players, especially the Seniors.

The Sophomore Coach Stoddard giving his speech and thanking all the players for a great season.

Alex received a Certificate for playing basketball. Could you spare a smile, Alex?

We are now looking forward to a busy basketball filled spring and summer. JV and Varsity are going to Gonzaga (Spokane, WA) for a 5-day camp on June 19-23. Alex is thrilled. Maybe Greg and Kristine can go watch him play...

Cupcakes to Ski Patrol

We went to see the Ski Patrol guys up in Sundance with cupcakes in hand to thank them for a great job that they did with Rod a week ago. One of the ski patrol guys, Jim (in red in the picture) told us that he had seen such a huge gash once in his life, and it was in a book. He also told us that Woody (the other guy) had burned his jacket in the process of helping Rod. The Life Flight helicopter guys couldn't find the landing spot so Woody had to light a flare and when he did that, his jacket caught on fire.

Jim also told us how impressed he was about Rod how concerned he was of Alex. And how Alex was taking care of Rod and the collision site to make sure that nobody skied too close to it.

Jim thought after seeing the picture of Rod's leg that it looked like a shark bite. Maybe we should change the story how this actually happened...

20 Some Stitches

This morning when Rod was getting ready to take a shower, we noticed that his entire dressing had slipped down his leg, so we took it off and re-dressed it. Immediately we both got barfy and light-headed and had to lay down for a minute. Rod counted about 20 stitches and we measured the scar to be about 8 inches.

Isn't it pretty? Tomorrow we go see his surgeon for a follow up.

Rod's Ski Accident 3-12-11

This is just a warning that this blog post will have an extremely graphic picture of Rod's leg after his accident. So beware. Read at your own risk.

Last Saturday I received a phone call from Rod saying that I should remain calm but something had happened and I should not panic. My first thought was that something had happened to Alex and my blood just drained from my face. I felt sick to my stomach right away. I had to sit down to receive the news.

Rod continued telling me that he had collided with his friend Jayson up in Sundance where they went skiing for an afternoon. They had NOT raced down the hill 50-60 miles per hour but somehow were going that fast and collided with each other.

Rod said that he had a big gash on his right thigh that looked pretty bad. It wasn't life threatening but he was going to be life flighted out of Sundance. Hospital destination still to be decided.

When you hear "Life Flight", the first thought comes to your mind that IT IS life threatening. Rod hung up and said that he would call back. In the mean time I called Whitney and asked her to come get me and take me to the hospital.

Rod called back and said that he would be flown to the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City. At this time Whitney and Craig had arrived and we went to pick up Alex from the mouth of the Provo Canyon where Jayson dropped him off. Surprisingly nothing had happened to Jayson. Whitney, Alex and I headed to Salt Lake while Craig went to pick up our car from Sundance.

Lovely scenery from the helicopter.

Rod's knee is braced during the flight

Hi there!

Life Flight helicopter landed to U of U hospital

This is how we found Rod in the hospital Emergency Room. Dazed and somewhat drugged up already. Not a lot of blood came out of the gash. Thank goodness.

Rod's knee all wrapped up

Ouch! 8 inch gash all the way to the bone. No broken bones. The joint capsule was affected and he had to have surgery so the capsule could be flushed out from potential bacteria. Dr. Tashjian was called in to perform the surgery.

Rod's bloody ski pants. When he got to the ER, they cut his pants off of him. He threated the nurses not to cut his $450 jacket. They didn't.

Jayson and Jennilynn came to see Rod in the ER. Ken Brailsford also came and Jayson and Ken were able to give Rod a priesthood blessing in which he was promised that he would get a complete and full function of the leg back and that Heavenly Father wanted him to learn something from this experience and Rod would need to find out what it was.

We waited in the Surgical Waiting room on the 3rd floor while the 45 minute surgery took place.

Alex watching TV while waiting for his dad to get out of surgery. Alex was so brave throughout the whole thing. He saw the accident happen and he was a great help to Rod.

Whitney is talking with Craig who drove up on Saturday night to bring me our car. Whitney was such a rock and such a great help to me. I just loved how calm she stayed and was such a great help to Rod as well.

Craig, Alex, Megan and Kendall are waiting for Rod in his hospital room. Megan and Kendall brought me fruit because I didn't want to eat the hospital food. They also provided us with a lot of entertainment. Such great people.

Rod is drugged up after his surgery and sleeping.

Wish I was able to sleep. I slept maybe an hour. Others went home but I stayed and slept on a small couch in the room. Luckily it was daylight savings time, so we had one less hour. The night seemed endless.

In the morning Rod felt better and the nurse brought him some juice and crackers before the breakfast got there.

Rod was cleared to leave after his "Physical Therapy" which was basically the physical therapist showing Rod how to use the crutches and see if he is able to walk with them.

Before we left the hospital around 1pm, Rod still had a conference call with his Zija leaders. The wheelchair guy had to wait for 5 minutes for Rod to finish the call. I think it is so funny that even with this kind of condition, Rod wanted to make sure that the leaders were okay. Nothing better than working 24/7 with gash or no gash.

We drove to Whitney's house to pick up Alex. Rod was calling all of his Zija leaders to make sure that they were okay and sharing his skiing story. Obviously he was totally drugged up and sleepy.

Alex and I helped Rod to put his shoes on.

The following day, Monday, I took Rod walking around our neighborhood. Need to get the man walking so he will heal properly.
What a weekend. But Rod is really doing so well. He ran 10 miles before he went skiing on Saturday so I think that might be the reason why with almost no pain, he is doing remarkably well.

I Need a Break, too!

It seems that I'm the only one in our family who doesn't get a break from the every day, mundane life. Rod travels the world and when he comes home, he goes on a golfing vacation. Alex...he goes skiing with his friends. Moms should get a break more often. I demand a break! I have been working hard or hardly working but still need a break from the cold winter and spring that is not here yet.

Rod and Craig golfing in Mesquite last week. Yep, it was mid 70s there. While they were there, it was rainy and crappy weather here. Me bitter? Just a little bit.

Alex and Hunter went skiing on Saturday up in Sundance. They had a great time. I didn't want to go skiing because it was a cloudy day. If you know me, Sunny Marj doesn't ski on a cloudy day.

I'm hoping to go skiing this Saturday with the family. It better be a sunny day.

Steve and Katie's birthday bowling

Last night we went to celebrate Steve and Katie's birthdays. Steve's was on Saturday and Katie's was yesterday. Katie wanted to go bowling so we went to Fat Cats to do just that.

Katie and Steve...the birthday girl and boy

Katie bowling. I especially like the little girl on the next lane who is bowling upside down and backwards.

I'm trying my best to beat the boys. No such luck.

Maya and her grandma Katie

Carsen means business with this bowling ball. He beat me, barely, but I must say that he used bumbers. So clearly I was the winner.

Rod, the big winner of the night, is showing his mad bowling skills.

Maya posing before her bowling.

Alex is holding the bowling ball like it was a basketball.

Taylor took it easy and didn't hardly bowl at all. When he did, he did it with his left hand.

Heather and her daughter Maya

Yes, I just got a strike. How can you tell?

Rod is ready to bowl some more.

at 9pm the glow-in-the-dark bowling started. How psychedelic and fun.

Happy 57th and 55th birthday Steve and Katie. What a fun night.
