House Remodel - May 8, 2012 - First Day of Demolition

We decided to remodel our house and contracted Lance Lawson as our contractor to do the work. We decided to do a simple and cheap remodel job but as we quickly realized, there was nothing simple or cheap about this remodel.

We toyed with the idea of moving out of the house while we remodeled but then decided to seal off the basement from the upstairs two floors and move to the basement. We had to put most of our furniture into storage and then move everything else into the basement.  Luckily we have three bedrooms, a bathroom, a full kitchen and a living room in the basement so it wouldn't be that bad for a couple of months.  Right???

The remodel started on May 8th with a first day of demolition.

A view from the front door to the office, which now would become Rod's walk-in closet.

The fireplace hood was ripped out.

A view from the living room into the kitchen. That wall would come down so the living room and kitchen would be all open.

Same wall. Now you can see into the kitchen.

We decided to keep the guest room and Alex's room intact and not remodel them because they were nice and recently done. That lasted a day and then decided to remodel those two rooms as well.  This was the first "growth".

A view from the office into the master bedroom.

Lots and lots of exposed studs.

At the same time of the remodel, we also replaced all of our windows. We had a different crew for the windows.  This is the north side of the house where Miia resides. Closed a window opening, got new sliding doors.

Got rid of the storm door and a window next to it.

Kitchen is gone.

The white shelves are gone in the kitchen.  These guys are fast!

The beams above the island are coming off as well.

MORP 5.12.12

MORP or Prom backwards is a casual dance and it is girls' choice. Prom was barely over when we got a knock on the door and Alex found an invitation on the doorstep for MORP.

"Alex, I would be overflowing with "Joy" if you went to MORP with me."

A toilet plunger and bunch of Almond Joys with letters taped to them that spelled Rachel Watkins on them.
Rachel is our neighbor girl that we have known forever and Alex and Rachel basically grew up together. She is the sweetest girl. Alex was happy to accept the invitation.  Then the pressure of how to answer Rachel started.  Luckily we went to dinner to Whitney's house and Kendall told Alex how he used to answer the girls. And the same idea sounded excellent...

Get a wheelbarrow, fill it with hamburger buns and write a poster that says:"I would love for you to "Haul" my "buns" to MORP!!!" Love Alex.

Alex is ready to deliver the wheelbarrow to Rachel's house.

Rachel is picking up Alex for the date. The theme for MORP was "Opposites Attract". Rachel was wearing a U of U shirt and Alex was wearing a BYU shirt.

Cute text in the back of the shirts.

Last cool look from both of them before leaving for the dance.

Jr. Prom 2012

Prom 2012. At first Alex was not going to go to his Jr. Prom. Then Emily, his girlfriend said that he HAS to go to his own Jr. Prom. Emily couldn't go because she is only 15, so Alex decided to ask Lauren Peery, Tyler's cousin. She is 15 but obviously she can go. Different rules, I guess.
Then the planning of how to ask Lauren started.
Alex settled with the flour bag invitation. And this is how it went.
Step 1.
He bought a 25 lb bag of flour and poked a hole in it and then taped it shut like he put something inside the bag, which he didn't. Instead, he put this note on it: "To find out who is asking you to PROM, look through the flour and you will receive your ANSWER."

Except, Alex didn't put anything inside the bag of flour.
Step 2.
Once Lauren had gone through the whole bag of flour, Alex would deliver the step 2, which is a flower that says: "Oops, wrong flower, Will you go to prom with me - Alex Larsen".

And this is how the whole thing went down. Tyler and Alex left about 10:30 at night to deliver the bag of flour at Lauren's house.  I told them to wait about 15-30 minutes before delivering the flower so she would have time to go through the flour at least a little bit. It turned out that Lauren was sifting the flour on her front porch when the boys were driving by. Alex threw the flower out the window and yelled at Lauren's sister, Ava to go and give the flower to Lauren. Not really according to the plan but close enough.

Alex never got a creative answer from Lauren except verbally so it is a date.
